Ten Years After 9/11, Our Greatest Tribute Is Our Service

Memorandum

DATE: September 8, 2011
TO: All Lockheed Martin Employees
FROM: Bob Stevens, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
SUBJECT: Ten Years After 9/11, Our Greatest Tribute Is Our Service

With the approach of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on America, I remember it like it was yesterday. It was an ordinary day…a beautiful, clear morning…then it turned sad and tragic. Suddenly, it was no ordinary day. We lost two members of our Lockheed Martin family – Bob and Zandra Ploger – when Flight 77 struck the Pentagon. We’ll remember them, and all the victims, on Sunday and always.

We had more than 500 employees in the Pentagon at the time of the attack. They evacuated safely, but many went back into the building that evening – while it was still burning – to work through the night to ensure mission-critical communications and information were back online early the next morning.

In the days following the attack, employees across our company went to 24-7 operations in support of our customers. We took care of them, and we took care of one another. And even though the demands were great, we didn’t miss a beat…because you stayed focused and acted professionally. I have never been prouder of you, and I’ll be forever grateful for your courage, patriotism, and selfless service in those difficult days.

September 11 was one of those events that change everything in our lives...where nothing going forward will ever be the same as it was, and where we’re compelled to imagine and live in a world that we could not previously envision. It ushered in the need for a renewed strategic assessment of our nation’s security posture, demanding new global security missions for our customers, and an increased global security leadership role for our company.

Ten years after 9/11, it’s still a dangerous world. It still needs people like you – who willingly serve our customers on every mission, wherever they are, with unequaled dedication, innovation, courage, and professionalism – to make it safer. I know you are up to the challenge. Thank you so very much for your service. It is the greatest tribute we can pay to fallen colleagues and those now in harm’s way.
